the last night....and last morning...oh and the last afternoon also....

Our final night in Melbourne was a rather interesting one. We had to move out to the Metro YHA due to Joanne's friend moving in the next morning, so Drew and I packed our things and Joanne kindly dropped us off for the last time. The YHA was very decent accommodation. Surprisingly decent. The room was very well kept and although the TV was a small one, it had access to foxtel and a variety of other channels which allowed me to watch the British Open (golf) into the wee hours of the night. The room also had 2 heaters which served us very well and a nice ensuite bathroom made for a very comfortable final night in the city of Melbourne.

The next morning, our final day in the city, we walked to Melbourne Central (where we were due to meet my cousin Jolynn again) and decided to hang around the area until she arrived. Somewhere between us reaching Melbourne Central and Jo arriving to meet us at Central, Andrew and I found ourselves sponsoring a World Vision kid! A cute little Colombian girl named Gloria, I think that is her name, and somehow in the randomness of it all we felt strangely relieved and surprisingly happy that we committed to donating a few hundred dollars a year to this little girl. Anyway, Jo arrived and we went back to the ridiculous Japanese restaurant again. And yet again it failed to disappoint. I ordered Unagi Don and I believe it was the biggest piece of Unagi I have ever seen at a Japanese restaurant (middle left pic above)! It tasted great too and Drew enjoyed a proTeriyaki Beef as well whilst Jo had Gyu Don again. After a delicious luncheon we decided to follow Jo back to her uni, Melbourne Uni, and basically follow her around until we got bored. We discovered a pizza shop called 'Pronto Pizza' which provides pizza delivery around campus! A gimmick that would surely suck funds out of a gullible person such as myself. We saw the library, and the terrible looking School of Econs and Commerce before surprising Jo's boyfriend Nick and a few of his friends. Eventually we parted ways, and it was goodbye to cousin Jo for another few months.

Andrew and I then voted on either wasting time at an internet cafe or Max Brenner - and the choice was obvious. We trekked the whole way back to Max Brenner at Melbourne Central before devouring a Chocolate Fondue for 2 and a hot chocolate each. One thing I would like to add is that if you ever order the Italian Hot Chocolate - order DARK chocolate and not milk. Trust me. Or rather, trust Andrew. It was ridiculous. So was the fondue actually. Anyhow we walked back to the YHA where we had kept our bags in this massive cage thing for $4 per person, and called a cab to take us to the airport. Literally 2 minutes later the taxi had arrived, and we were one the way back home. We held our breaths as we had to check in the ridiculous amount of luggage Drew had ended up with (I had 2 bags while he had 4 pieces. Maybe 5 actually) and were relieved when everything went through without any dramas. A quick phone call to my dear Aunchisa (including a short conversation with her sister too) and it was boarding time and it was finally time to say goodbye to Melbourne. It had been a great holiday, one of the best I had ever embarked on, and the amount of fun we had was incredible. SO many experiences- shopping and eating :), meeting up with people, walking, getting lost, walking some more. It was the first holiday Drew and I had been on together without anyone else and the freedom we enjoyed as fellow Patachas was very freedom-like indeed. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and thoughts as we discovered the true Patacha way! Till next time, peace and God bless from both of us!

vic markets re-visited..cousin jo and the ridiculous japanese food...universal restaurant pro..

From memory all this occured on the Saturday before we left. I think. Anyway Drew and I headed back to the markets in pursuit of some gifts for people, and also for those ridiculously pro Spanish Donuts. Drew ended up buying something nice for his mum, moisturiser I think, and I am not entirely sure if I bought anything at all. Except the donuts. We also ventured to the fish and meat market area which was a pretty cool experience. I don't understand why Drew said I looked like such an Asian tourist. Maybe it was due to the ridiculous number of photos I was snapping. Or maybe it was due to the fact that I am indeed Asian. Interesting..

Anyway my cousin Jolynn just arrived back from KL on the Friday (day before) and she caught a tram to meet us at the Vic Markets. We haven't caught up since the end of eyar holidays last year so it was pretty good. She said that there was a pro Japanese restaurant at Melbourne Central so we decided to head there for lunch. And boy was it pro. I had the best teriyaki beef I have ever tasted in my life. It was warm and moist and had some vegetables in it - very decently priced too! Drew bought katsu curry which was also good but not as ridiculous as mine, and I think Jo bought gyu don. Good food at reasonable prices. Fits perfectly into the patacha way of life.

We parted ways temporarily as Drew and I headed home for a quick shower and nap whilst Jo headed of to her boyfriends house which was pretty near our dinner destination anyways. Drew and I caught a tram to Melbourne Uni and from there we met Jo and walked quite a distance (backwards) to our restaurant of choice - the Universal something and something. The food wasa really good but the price was even better. Porterhouse Steak with chips and salad for $13, a 'grande' serving of home-made pasta for $11, and pizza for $10. I'm not entirely sure what it is with all the restaurants having the Ferrari memorabilia but at least Universal was cool. The amount of topping the chef put on the pizza was ridiculous! Check out the middle pic from the collage below to see the pizza before it went into the oven! After the scrumptious dinner we walked Jo back home and then we in turn walked home and enjoyed a great nights sleep. Oh and somewhere in the middle of our trip Drew got hooked on Prison Break. Sigh.

Leaving..then not..then Eureka tower..then Crown..then home...pro

Drama drama. Andrew's friend Jonathon was supposed to put us up for the next few nights at his place (bless his heart) so one morning we packed up our stuff and Joanne dropped us off at his place somewhere next to Melbourne Uni. What happened was Joanne had a future flat mate coming to inspect her apartment and basically our smelly patacha ways could have affected her opinions. So we arrived at the dude's apartment but he wasn't answering his phone. And he never did. So basically Drew and I had to wait for a good 2 hrs in a crappy juice bar/lobby area of the apartments until Joanne kindly came and picked us up again. Let's just say I wasn't the happiest patacha in the world at that point in time. Oh and the dude finally woke up - at 6pm! Nasty boy.

Anyhoo, I contacted an old friend and decided to meet up with him and head to the brand spanking new Eureka Skydeck - which is the tallest building in Australia and one of the tallest in the world. It also has the fastest elevators in the Southern Hemisphere which is a cool gimmick. Macca (Nathan) showed us where to go and we took a few pictures at the top of the building, the 88th floor, and wasted a bit of time trying to spot famous locations and other important landmarks. After all this 'sightseeing' we were hungry, and decided that there wasn't a better option than Harry's Bar and Grill to enjoy a nice evening meal of some kind. I think I ordered pasta and Drew ordered something similar while Macca ordered a pizza. Oh and I ordered a garden salad too. Healthy boy I am.

dinner at stalactites & hard rock...

After our market and museum adventure we decided that we needed to pile back on the pounds we had already lost from the hours of walking we did. We couldn't think of a better place to attempt this feat other than Stalactites. We heard rumours of it's crazy Greek food so to test the theory we ordered Greek salad followed by a bowl of chips, a meat platter for two and some pita bread with dips. A serving of Bakhlava and creme caramel rounded up the meal (and our stomachs) and we left the place as two satisfied patachas. Hard Rock Cafe wasn't too far away from the restaurant so we decided to venture there and have a look. It was ok, not very crowded and no live music kind of put us off. So we ended up being cheapos and basically admired the memorabilia and took some photos before heading back home to keep Joanne company.

Oh and another thing I forgot to add - Drew bought this stupid hat from the Roger David factory outlet at DFO Essendon. Personally I think he looks retarded but he seems to like it.

The Vic Markets and Museum...

I was told that the Queen Victoria Markets were another one of those 'must-see' places in Melbourne, so one morning I dragged Drew there in the hope of finding a good bargain. We found quite a few bargains in fact, or rather ideas for future visits back to the market. The Spanish Donut stand that Drew is standing in front of was a great find. It is rated amongst the top 4 donuts in Melbourne, ranking alongside Krispy Kreme and even some French specialty donuts. I thought it was really good, the only minor problem was the slightly excessive amounts of oil. Oh and the picture of the skid mark is just to make the collage complete. No real purpose for that being there really.

Following our visit to the markets we trekked back the entire way home (well almost home) to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX theatre. We didn't actually go to the IMAX because of the price but museum entry was free so we took advantage of this in true patacha fashion and 'purchased' the free museum entry without IMAX ticket.

The museum itself was pretty average. More of a discovery centre really. Some interesting stuff in there still. The CSIRAC was pro and so was the giant squid. Naked models of old people were pretty funny as well. Basically we wandered around for a good 2 hours or so looking at the interesting animals etc. and then we went home because we were bored.

Jeremy's house, Cafe Corretto and Koko Black...

I have absolutely no idea what day this occurred so I am going to title the posts by the events ok! We made our way to Jeremy's house one day/night and met his crazy dog. Hyperactive animal. Camera shy too. Anyway, Andrew showed off his crazy Andy McKee pro drifting haha but everyone was impressed. He even tried to play some piano while he was on a good run but unfortunately his luck ran out. We hung out with Jeremy's younger brother Tim who is in the know about Jazz and crazy Jazz musician pros. From memory he plays cello and Jeremy is at least grade 8 in violin.

Dinner was at Lygon St. Everyone had been telling us to go try out the fantastic Italiano food at Lygon so we went with Joanne and Jeremy to Cafe Corretto. The food was pretty decent, ambience wasn't the greatest but there was a model Ferrari hanging from the roof along with a whole bunch of other Ferrari memorabilia which increased the cool level of the place slightly. I think I ordered a carbonara as I always do, and Drew ordered some other pasta with the 4 of us sharing a pizza in the middle. We then headed to Koko Black for dessert/hot chocolate. Rumour has it that Koko Black has hot chocolate that can rival and potentially out-rival the glory of Max Brenner, and it was rather good but Drew and I are still not convinced that it leaves Max Brenner in it's wake. The Belgian Delights were nice. The mousse was super thick and the ice cream followed suit with the other small things being fairly average taste-wise. What impressed me was the presentation of the food items. Each and every cup of hot chocolate was meticulously prepared (by the roundish Asian dude) and had a nice pretty pattern on the top. The sale items were pretty well presented too, and it all made for yet another good night of food and fun in Melbourne.

Max Brenner and the crazy Brazilian Meat Buffet!!

So they day started off pretty mellow - a trip to Smith Street (I think that's what it is called) where the Adidas and Nike factory outlets were situated, and then we went home to rest for a while. Oh in Melbourne there are these wicked cool things called 'hook turns' (see bottom left of the above picture for instructions) and I think Perth should make some too. Drew bought some woollen or fake woollen long sleeve things and a nice scarf - which he later grew to regret. The buying of the scarf I mean. It is a nice scarf though.

MAX BRENNER!! Oh my yama ridiculous pro. The layout and ambience of the place is fantastic, made me want to buy every damn thing in the shop. The menu was pro, the pictures IN the menu were more pro than the menu itself but most importantly the chocolate was pro. Thick hot chocolate in the coolest cups I have ever used at a cafe ('Hug Mugs', supposed to wrap your hands around them I think). I think I got a Venezuelan Milk Chocolate and Drew got an American one. Both pro though highly recommend anything from the menu at Max Brenner. Oh and the Melbourne Central one is less crowded than the QV one, by the way.

But the highlight of the night had to be the half-price Tuesday at Blue Fire. Blue Fire is a Brazilian barbecue place which was quite ridiculously priced (our meal would have cost about 65AUD each) but there is a specialty buffet they call 'Churrasco' or Churra something. Basically everyone has a double sided coaster with a red and green side. Red means stop serving and green means bring it on :). The waiters bring out freshly barbequed meats and some seafood after a delicious entree of roasted vegetables and bruschetta, and continue to serve you until you cannot go on any more. Chicken, lamb, calamari, fish, pork, random other meats- you get the idea. Drew ate till he literally vomitted, and that takes some doing. I was sickly full too - the molten chocolate dessert at the end was what got me. Joanne had aout 15 cobs of corn which is still 10 shy of her personal best of 25. Basically - we were all stuffed to the brim. Walking home was an effort and from memory we watched Heroes until the wee hours of the night. Blue Fire is a must-have experience for all you wannabe buffet heroes - you haven't had a buffet until you have had a meat only buffet at Blue Fire! Only on Tuesdays though...

Day 2 continued..i think it was day 2..

So anyway, we continued walking down the Yarra River (or up, whatever floats your boat) and crossed a nice little bridge thing to go to grab a drink at Boost Juice. The riverside is a pretty good place to take pictures and I think later I took some photos at night with the lights and what not - which looks more professional than the daytime pics.

On the way back we stopped by a street-side "stall" sort of thing, which was basically 2 people selling framed pictures that they had drawn. Joanne is a sucker for this kind of stuff so she bought one silly girl. We also passed by a few main city areas such as the QV Building and walked back pass Melbourne Central to grab some nutella donuts mmhmm (they were actually pretty average, nutella in a donut- very imaginative). Oh and we picked up a small acoustic amp for Joanne from Cranbourne Music as well. The rest of the afternoon/early evening was spent watching Drew catch up his episodes of Heroes - to which he was addicted for the first few days of holiday. And of course Jeremy came to visit after work and afterwards Joanne followed him back to his place for family dinner. Or something similar to that.

My fellow patacha and I decided it was time to hit the casino - for food purposes. We heard a rumour that Crown had cheap food in order to attract people in the hope that after saving money on feeding their bellies they would blow hundreds more on the slot machines and other silly gambling games. Not that I have anything against silly gambling games. The amount of people playing the crappy crappy slot machines was incredible, although that recognisable ring of the coins dropping down the machine's chute occured fairly frequently. We ate at a place called George's - and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The pasta and pizza is only $9.90 and the $3.90 garden salad was one of the best salads I enjoyed during my entire Melbourne experience. After 5 photos or so I was kindly informed that cameras were not allowed on the gaming floor. Oops. Oh and on the way home we passed a fast food outlet called Lord of the Fries. I thought that was pretty interesting/corny.

Melbourne Day 2

The next morning we headed off to do a little bit of recon on Melbourne city, for future outings. Joanne brought us first to Melbourne Central (I think) and then we slowly made our way through the underground section of Myer and finally came out somewhere in the city. Melbourne is so much busier than Perth and I was initially shocked at the amount of ridiculously good shops and restaurants there were. The 'Yarra' trams also amused Drew and myself for those of you who understand :) (oh I put up some more pics of the apartment if anyone is interested).

Jeremy (Joanne's man friend) called somewhere in the middle of all that, and we met him at the Adidas shop during his lunch break. The shop was really good apart from one small thing - the price. If not for the ridiculously high but normal Adidas prices, I would have bought the store down.

In true patacha fashion we headed towards the Melbourne Visitor Centre. I was amused by the random people wearing red t-shirts who's sole purpose in life was to help lost and stranded noobs like myself around Melbourne City. And after that we headed to take some pictures around the most appropriately named Yarra River. I think I need some sleep so I will continue this blog tomorrow ok? Thank you

Melbourne!! (Day 1)

Day 1: Arrival We arrived at night around 8ish and caught the Skybus (which brought about immediate whinging from Drew) to the Spencer St terminal. Joanne (the friend we stayed with) kindly picked us up in her brand spanking new Golf and we headed back to her apartment where we would base ourselves for the next 8 days. The apartment was literally perfect for us - 3 guitars including a 'Baby' Taylor, Gibson and a classical along with a Yamaha keyboard. Drew and I slept in the lounge area on two sofa beds (which was much better than we had imagined) and kept our luggage in the spare guest room. Location-wise, this place was pro. Joanne'es aparment is on La Trobe St, which runs all the way down to Melbourne Central and is only a 10 minute walk from the heart of the city. Basically, it was a great start to the trip (apart from the fact that i lost my camera battery for the first day or so of the trip).

I am not entirely sure what happened the rest of that night but I'm sure it was fantastic. We may have possibly gone out but from what I can remember we stayed home, Joanne's boyfriend Jeremy came to visit, and we showed off our freaky guitar pros.

SKI TRIP!!!!

Man, the ski/snowboarding trip was awesome! Got heaps of pics and stuff to upload and what not but that old foe (the crap internet) has foiled our plans to bring the joys of Jindabyne and Perisher Blue to the people. Currently in Melbourne where (surprise surprise) my friends internet connection recently screwed up! Sucks to be me but oh well. We will update the blog ASAP :)

P.S Melbourne is shopping heaven! Too bad I don't have enough money to buy to my heart's content :(

07/07/07

Hillsong Conference just ended last night. It was a very tiring and busy 5 days, but I have been immensely blessed and touched by the Lord. My life has been transformed! The word spoke to me with such clarity and conviction and worship was amazing, ushering in the glory of God.

Volunteering was good fun, I got to meet heaps of new people while serving others. I originally did it to save on the registration fee, but I later realized that God had a greater plan and purpose for me being a volunteer.

At the final night rally, I felt prompted to give "X" amount for the offering, so I did just that. Later that night, when i registered for the 2008 conference, I realized that I had $180 left in my wallet, which is exactly how much the registration cost.

Coincidence? No way!

Day 5

The 2nd day of conference (wednesday) had a sense of excitement about it because Israel 's Houghton was the main event of the day - and I love Israel's music. The morning sessions featured Australian Idol Guy Sebastien and also Paulini, with Joseph Prince and Louie Giglio both preaching at the morning sessions.

After waking Drew up from his morning nap in the volunteer's dining lounge we chilled for a while then met up with Justin and Ryan to head off to the Worship and Creative Arts Stream for the Darlene Zschech and Israel elective which was slightly disappointing as there was not much of Israel (check out the photos of Drew sleeping - there are MANY more!). For the first time we headed home for an afternoon nap in between the early sessions and the night sessions in order to keep us all awake for both evening services! Israel and New Breed were amazing at both sessions with his new look band with a few new faces, and Nigel Hendroff even got a chance to be a part of the New Breed. The bass player was amazing and played a 6 string Spector bass which is probably worth multiple thousands at the least, with the keyboardist playing a Yamaha Motif XS6 on top of a Motif XS8. Brian Houston and Jentezen Franklin spoke at the 4.30pm and 6.30pm sessions respectively, and after the last night session we headed off to a kebab/pizza joint to eat supper and catch the last bit of the State of Origin.

Day 4

The first official day of the Hillsong conference. With Drew serving as a volunteer I was basically left on my own to fend for myself like a helpless little boy. It wasn’t all that bad though, with the first session featuring a time of praise and worship led by Darlene Zschech and the Hillsong band followed by a message from John Bevere (who Drew claims is the smartest preacher at the conference so far). The second morning session had Chris Tomlin lead in worship followed with preaching from Brian Houston.

After we split up into our electives we headed towards the Howee Complex (I think that’s how to spell it) where Chris Tomlin led worship with his world famous song How Great Is Our God – which he composed, by the way. Jentezen Franklin preached about worship and so ended the first 3 sessions of the Hillsong Conference. We headed to DFO (minus Drew) which is the Direct Factory Outlet located about 5 minutes away from Conference and had lunch before doing a little bit of shopping.

John Bevere preached again at the 4.30pm session followed by Louie Giglio’s ‘Indescribable’ presentation before which Chris Tomlin led praise and worship. All in all it was a pretty tiring day with all the wandering around and random walking and lack of sleep amongst other things, but all was made good with a visit to Krispy Kreme where a couple of free BOXES of donuts lifted my spirits just a little J.

P.S may I just mention how ridiculously expensive the internet is here at Hillsong. That’s about all I have to say really. It’s worth it though J

PICTURES!!

Oh by the way, the collages are expandable! Just click on them and they will link to a larger image which is more viewable. HAVING SAID THAT some of the links aren't working (the most recent links) so keep waiting and we will fix it sometime!

Day 2,3

Well as you can probably tell internet access (or time for that matter) are both quite rare at the time being. Good news is that the other half of the holiday crew arrived today - Chester, Gloria and of course Aunchisa (oh today is wednesday and hence my blogs are not dated correctly due to lack on internet-ness).

Anyway, we spent Sunday morning at Hillsong Baulkam Hills at the 10.45am service and afterwards spent the rest of the day with Andrew's uncle (Uncle Isaac). As you can see in the photos we had a bit of fun at uncle Isaac's - playing drums, Drew dancing, wathcing TV, Drew dancing etc. In the late afternoon Drew and Serene (his cousin) headed off to church while Dad and myself bummed at home with Drew's uncle. Drew then met us after church and we headed out for dinner. Dinner was at a restaurant called Temasek followed by a good nights sleep occupied the rest of the night.

Day 3 signalled the start of the Hillsong conference night sessions. After basically wasting the entire morning and afternoon wandering around with my father and brother we eventually met up with mother and made out way to the Acer Arena at Homebush for the first night rally of this year's conference. Ps John Bevere spoke and it was pretty pro I think and afterwards we visited 'Pancakes on the Rocks' somewhere on 'the rocks' and I don't exactly know where. It was incredible - beef ribs, the ultimate pancake, choc troppo pancake, any pancake you can think of! Felt sick after though but managed to sleep it off :)

Part 2 (Day 1)..

Anyway, after we woke up we decided to head out in the general direction of Westfield Paramatta. Unfortunately we spotted the Nike factory on the way which in turn led to McDonalds lunch and also a trip to the Adidas factory and other stores such as Kathmandu and Rebel Sport. Drew bought a polo from Nike and I purchased a cool thermal long sleeve thing from Adidas. We took a few photos in the changing room of Kathmandu which are possibly not meant to be on the internet but too bad for us.

By the end of our first shopping expedition is was time for dinner, and Chinatown in Paramatta somewhere was the desired location. I think the shop was called 'No.1 BBQ' or something similar. Food was pretty good too, complimentary soup is always a bonus! After all this we were all tired and headed home for a quick impromptu photo session and a night of watching rugby and heroes on the laptop (I think we watched 6 episodes). Check out the photos for yourselves :)

P.S I have no internet so my posts may be slightly irregular but old Drew will keep you guys updated :)

Day 1..

Sydney! We arrived at about 6am Sydney time and pretty much stoned our way through the first hour or so after arrival. Gloria Jeans coffee was the only available food outlet at the time so we had to endure a ridiculously sweet wake up call at about 7ish. After being entertained by Drew and his guitar for a while we left the cafe and headed off to catch a cab to the car rental company - Bayswater Rental.

We then journeyed to the place where we were going to stay for the duration of the Hillsong conference. A small 'quaint' place as my father describes it, not as nasty as it looks :) quite warmish and enough room to move around. Everyone basically fell asleep, and it appears that Drew fell asleep with me somehow (not entirely sure how it happened really). Mum got picked up by her friends at about 11.30am and the three men (Drew, Dad and Myself) finally awoke at about 2pm. Sleep is good :)
